SANRAL Learnerships Careers Opportunity

Before we get to Sanral Learnership Career, it would be a good idea to get to know more about what it really is first. SANRAL is an acronym for South African National Roads Agency Limited. It is a state-owned company that works to manage, maintain, and develop the national road network of South Africa. This network also includes a large number of national route segments as well as those of provincial ones. The establishment of the agency was first initiated by the signing of National Roads Act in 1998. This act determined that the agency is in fact a corporate form of continuation of South African Roads Board, originally part of the Department of Transport. On May 19, 1998, the agency was declared a company of public limited type. SANRAL became a subject of criticisms in 2011. Public resented the plan to establish tolling system in SANRAL’s many freeways in and around Gauteng. This system was put in place as SANRAL required funding for their expansions, which was part of the phase one of the GFIP or the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project. The GFIP itself was a program initiated as a solution to severe traffic congestion cases in the freeways of Gauteng.

The Minister of Transport represents the sole shareholder of SANRAL in the state. A board of directors consisting of 8 members governs the agency. Five of the members are voting members and are appointed by the Minister of Transport for a three-year term. The other three members are non-voting. SANRAL employs at least 178 workers as of 2009. Those workers are divided between four regional offices and the head office. There have been a total of 16,170 km of roads managed by the agency in 2009. By 2014, the number rose to 22,000 km. SANRAL operates with two categories of services: Toll roads and non-toll roads. The former is self-funding while the latter receives financial supports from the Department of Transport. Some of the toll roads are privately funded and supervised by SANRAL (e.g. the Platinum Highway, the Maputo Corridor, and the N3 Toll Concessions). The other remaining toll roads are SANRAL-owned and –operated (e.g. Huguenot Tunnel, the Tsitsikamma Toll Road, the N2 Tolls, and the N1 Tolls). Seeing that it comes with a responsibility this broad and big, it is no wonder that SANRAL may require a lot of professional supports and look for possible candidates to hire.
